Look...uh, like?...

Does this...? look like this...? look like this...?

does this...?

look like this...?

...look like this...?
Answer: no.
Neeeeuwwww.
If you be I.

"Did anyone ever tell you you look like...?"

"No. No, they didn't. Shut up, get away from me..." - probably would have been the appropriate answer.

Think it started '94. Which is okay. Guy smoking behind the bikeshed, (school)... "haha, yo'all look like Seinfeld.". I smiled. "woah, you look even more like Seinfeld when you smile. Bro, smile! Smile!"

Which is okay. I mean that's before the days of lol.

Hey, fourteen year old girl compares a guy she likes to Beiber / Paterson, totally normal...

It's just that... I'm working (steady security gig) with one o' the smartest gals I know in 2009, she tells me I look like Cage.

Brush it off, but same job, few days... waltzin' the street, guy's all like, "hey you're that comedian from Youtube, aww I ferget the name!!".
Brush. Off.

Then I hit Melbourne, Australia (2011) purley for study purposes - "Seinfeld, hey, you're like Seinfeld, Smile. OMG - Seinfeld!"

Initiated from one individual, it isn't long until the entire class decides I'm Jerry Seinfeld. Do I need to point out I have a moustache at this point in my life??...

I guess. It's just. A mentality.

Some people feel the need. (to associate)

As far as I figured, I'm me. Good at it too. My nose is crooked-algebraic at best.

What happened? 2008. An indian joker loses his shit in the street.
"Oh My God?!!" ... "It's Ben Stiller!!" Guy's like glancing around for confirmation, left, right, I think he's joking, but he's dead set I'm Ben Stiller. Glancing, double takes, announcing this to the world. Step back, step forward (where are the hidden cameras?). It takes me more than 30 seconds to assure him. I'm NOT Ben Stiller.

Stiller generally walks the streets of Wellington's oldest suburb, wearing a purple bandana, scoring some spraypaint for his BMX project??  Didn't think so...

That said, I can pull out some moves to 'Wild Boys'... but really...

... If one more person calls me Nicolas Cage... (seriously) to my face...
I can't b held responsible for what happens next.

Brisbane, Australia. I got Cage a lot. (just slide, rihia, just slide...), a crew I worked with even changed my POS program avatar to Jerry Seinfeld... nice, but even here, back in "Farming Town", New Zealand:
* Passerby: "hey, that guy looks like.."
* Argentinian coworker: "you know, you look like..."
* Job interviewer: "sorry, I keep calling you Nic for some reason (wink)..."

My name ain't Nic, not even close.
Okay, so this subject doesn't truly deserve it's own blog, but I'm getting it offa my chest while I can.

Because there's something about being 'approached & accompanied' to the post office last weekend by two keen young Mormons, which is fine, really, until one has to enquire, "Has anyone ever told you - you look like Ben Stiller?"

Aargh, for freaking...!! Grrr, Ben Stiller wouldn't even look like Ben Stiller when he's sporting long hair, a full beard and wrap-around-shades - how can you even see me under here?!

Fine. If I absolutely have to look like an iconic mug...
... I'm going with Robert Garcia from Art of Fighting.

Wait, wait... more specifically -

... 'POST-NUT-PUNCH Robert Garcia'.

"Anyone ever tell you, you look like...?"

Why, yes. Sure. There I am...

The Hoodwik'd Menace...

... of gloom and doom.

Checking out a lunar eclipse the other night, and as it peaks, goes dark, a civil defense siren sounds  in the background.
Gloom n' doom's hilarious!

Yeah, we're in a stage of several blood moon eclipses. Portents o' doom, et cetera.
Et cetera.

Didn't read the articles but some Texan preacher's on about World's End. On account of some astronomical phenomena. But, Hey! you can't get all god-bothering on one hand and space science on the other! They'd be burnin' Jaspers like him at the stake for such hijinks 200 year back.

Aaand;
- Japan's kinda had their apocalypse.
- Go tell someone in Ukraine there might be political upheaval in the cards.
- Go tell  someone from Chile or Solomon Islands to keep an eye out for natural disasters.
- Or... well, basically... Nigeria.

It's. All. Relative.
Belt around the world is tightening, sure. And perhaps the precious, spoiled West is nearing an end as we know it. Especially if you refuse to gel global.
Can't force feed the earth scones without acceptin' a little baklava yourself.
No crumpet without the option of dosa, my friend.

While religion is a touch silly, piety can be a nice word. Are we genetically predisposed to belief with a societal pressure to conform to atheism? Or vice versa? It depends where you are.

Since Ugg discovered fire, Ugg's been back and forth between spirituality and science to stop it getting out of hand and burning his eyebrows off.
Ugg frequently makes it worse, Ugg very occasionally gets both t' work... a little bit.
Mostly however, Ugg's flame control contrast has a tendency to suck, y'know when you've got a penance whip in one pocket and depleted uranium rounds in the other.

It's a wheel alright.
Sometimes... F*ck the wheel! Burn a direct course thru the middle.

Maybe we should all kinda' be semi-agnostic pseudo-pantheists getting on with sharing knowledge, culture and technological achievement - like the final scene outta' Grease, gettin' along 'cos we all know the words, and respecting other people's right to fly off in a 1950's themed amusement ride.

Which brings me to Hoodwik...

... holdson family values ...

The game of skill and strategy. Which is the least anyone can ask for in a board game.

And... it's basically checkers.

I'd never heard of Hoodwik.
Never even heard of anyone else hearing of Hoodwik.Which is why I like tiny 2nd hand shops in small beach side locations.

Play is very simple. The idea - remove all of opponent's playing pieces. You can reposition a piece one space in any direction. When there is the opportunity you can jump an opponent's piece, and continue jumping any additional pieces in any direction provided there is a space behind.

Failure to jump any pieces during your turn, when able, results in forfeiting the playing piece.
(Provided your opponent notices)

And... it's basically checkers.

Still, it's nice to disconnect/unplug, get traditional on it.
That said, J-Rex and I played it once, before I lost her to Ni No Kuni again.

There's no 75 like 1975. Holdson have a great reputation. Just that slight problem which can befall these types of boardgames.

If either player is concentrating even remotely, it's gonna' be a whole evening of Naughts & Crosses stalemates.

Forget, "If a tree falls in the forest..." our philosophical question is, "If two inherent cowards are playing Hoodwik for life or death stakes, does Hoodwik ever end?"

The answer is "No, no Hoodwik has never been as popular as Cher."

Fortunately we still have our Holdson Family Values...

Love and Warrior...

...Why?
Why when walking to a drawer and your girlfriend casually states, as simply as asking for a glass of water or if the newspaper arrived, that the Ultimate Warrior died, do you suddenly stand slack-jawed making 15 breathy noises of confusion none of which are words?
Why is that?
Warrior warrior warrior warrior warrior warrior warrior warrior Warrior
People die all the time. Famous people, tragic people, boring people, young, old, hairy, wiggly rainbow or spinach farming people. People die. It's what we do. Blah blah mortality, etc.
Beauty is only more apparent because either it fades, or we do, etc.
Warrior warrior warrior warrior warrior warrior warrior
Perhaps... I mean, Superman died in 1992, (wow headlines!). George Harrison died in 2001. But folks like James Hellwig/Warrior don't just blur the line between fictional and actual personas, rather they make an illegible, brutal mess of said line.
Plenty of my childhood heroes have karked it, actual people, family members, characters written out of stories. But there was only one Warrior.
warrior warrior warrior warrior warrior warrior warrior warrior
Maybe you don't like wrestling. And, okay, while he leaped around playing pugilista, got selected most alongside Macho and Hogan in Technos' WWF Superstars arcade game, became the most enviable collector card at my primary school and released a mild brain seizure of a comic book.
He got the job done.

Besides, two weeks back I realized I hadn't been a child for a few years, and it struck me to read up on where the Warrior might be now. And I discovered he had a blog. (link) I was amazed.
Water paintings of political and historical thinkers and doers. Quotes, thoughtful, both coined and original.

Amazed, yeah I was. Because of the sincere self-awareness, not entirely selfish, the knowledge that Hellwig's fantasy of the Warrior identity had a very real purpose.
He got the job done.
warrior warrior
Besides I was having a particularly shitty day and nothing's gonna' kick your arse outta' self-pity mode like a steaming hot cup of Warrior blog. Works better than Henley's Invictus.
Yeah.
That's why.
warrior
So thanks, James. Thanks, Warrior. You two make a great team. Rest In Honour.

Play, mates, play! ...

... that's a direct order.
Though 'mate' isn't a ranking title of the armed services... so fairly obvious I'm not militarah personnel.

I am, however, certified 'random as'.
So random brings us...
-Blurry photos o' my best gal, taken thru Steve Austin's left eye?
-17 pages of backwards Nick Cave lyrics to the tune o' Boney M's 'Rasputin'?
-Snapshot of a diapered purple kitten atop a gigantic sweet potato?

Nay!
Here be an anniversary o' sorts.
51 extremely lazy blog posts later (first don't count), yes, fifty-ish posts after my half-assed Playmates Rat-King spiel, I figure mo' plastic in the Playmates vein needs a-recognizing.

O'Neil For Real...

...oh, so Playmates Toys was annerversificating too in 2008.
Anyone with even a remote inn'erest in TMNT already knew that!

I thought it imperative to acquire one I never owned.

Joy to that first panel - "Splinter, a penniless but powerful ninja master who lives in the muck".
Penniless but powerful - respect. Lives in the muck - optional.

My first purely unadulterated introduction to TMNT was born through the eyes of an eight year old during classroom show and tell.
All us schmuck-heads displaying fossilized skulls and homemade solar systems - pffh!, Janna stole the show with two simple sentences;

"Daddy took us to California. I got a Teenage Mutant Ninja Snail... you're not allowed to touch it!".

California was a mythical far off land to me, but shit, I knew what toys were! And a toy we didn't have in New Zealand yet? Oh, I hadda know more!

Near impossible to recall true feelings of unfamiliarity with Ninja Turtles here, 2014, but I know I stayed in class during lunch hour ogling Michaelangelo on that teacher's desk. Much burning desire.

Obviously wasn't long til I'm ridin' the sewer wave of TMNT = collecting the cards, popping 20s in the 'cade game, glued to the toon, eventually queuing up in front for that live-action film.
Needless to say - action figure acquisition.

But I never picked up April...

"Witness the finesse, and summon up the power of banana clan."

Sigh, typical boy-child, would've picked her up for completion's sake if I'd run out of options, but the way turtles characters kept spewing out of the toy aisles - 'running out of options' was never an option! Besides, ask any man-kid if he'd prefer 'human journalist' or 'mutant martial artist' in his hands - no brainah.
Give someone a humble award...
... she's not sculpted as a scantily clad unproportionate fantasy.

On Apes alone? - truth, without being the iconic cartoon April O'Neil character, figure doesn't hold a lot of weight. Notably the legs. Even on the the original... it always stood out. Most every character had a ball-joint socket set-up (reminiscent of Remco Wrestlers). Apes, however, got basic quality swivel legs and while Playmates threw in a 360 waist twist it more or less leaves her slightly out of sync with the line.

Sporting the Anime-eye-makeup look, NewsGirl?

Gonna' hassle her slightly 'bobble headed' qualities? Naw, original turtle toys could suffer the same syndrome. She sports blue jumpsuit stripes instead o' the old-school orange you could find, and is clearly marked 2008, happily avoiding confusion on the secondary market.

Took those accessories off the tree like a messy brute, but hey, it's been up to 44 degrees round here.
That's 111.2 fahrenheit in Manhattan, turtle-fan. I ain't expendin' delicacte energy where I don't gots ta'.

Not that Playmates didn't try to up the game a lil' given April's accessories. Camera, flashlight, briefcase... er, shuriken? ... um, gun!?
We talkin' 'bout the same initial cartoon April here, because, yes, she was sassy but O'Neil poppin' caps in disagreeable mofos or cuttin' a b*tch, just don't feel right? That's what her turtles are for.

(admitting comic April was something more of a hard-ass)

Mmmebbe Playmates shoulda' just double-packed April O'Neil with Vernon Fenwick 'cos how well did that guy sell alone?

No, there's nothing weird about wearing a yellow jumpsuit to work.
Or hailing a cab with shuriken in your hand.

...get ya Scully on...

Aww, but a freekin' gun-like?

Anti-firearm publicists sleeping that weekend?
No matter... the packet slates weapon: gun/camcorder. Make it work, rihia2k.

See there? When a ladies gotta' carry some '88 Panasonic VHS camcorder, all precarious, up on her wrist like that? Something ain't right.

Not on my watch, Mephistocles...

Way I see it the camera is an integral part of April. Gun, not so much. It's all hollow in there anyways, so a little shunt and hey presto! April can finally hold the thing like it's useful...
... and start paying the rent.

What!? Girls gotta' make a living.
And you can't keep milking turtles.

(Actually - can't milk a turtle. Please don't try kids.)
